Picture this, clear worktops, an uncluttered desk, a place for everything, and an always tidy living room! I know, sorry. It’s a new year, which means Christmas has just been and I’m pretty sure that no one’s home is tidy, organised and uncluttered because what do we do with all of the lovely new things we received from thoughtful friends and family?
How to get organised at home is often the last thing on our mind at Christmas, which means it comes to the forefront in the new year.
There is no better time to figure out how to get organised, start the new year as you mean to go on. Uncluttered, motivated and relaxed.
How to get Organised at home?
There are so many things you can use to get organised. You don’t have to spend a fortune, or even spend anything at all. You could make a pledge to buy less, upcycle more and just generally have less clutter. Use things like boxes, shelves, and hidden storage to hide the clutter you already have.
How do you stay clean and organised?
Personally, I think that the trick of how to get organised at home is to make sure that you have a place for everything. This means either finding a practical home for things or creating them if you can’t bear to part with that particular object. Then making sure you return things to their home once you have finished with them (that’s the bit I find difficult), otherwise you end up with piles of stuff on every free surface you can find.
What are the benefits of being organised?
There are more benefits to getting organised than just a clutter-free home. Getting organised can.
- Reduce stress
- Improve concentration
- Improves productivity
- Save money
- Have more free time
- Clears your mind
- Reduces anxiety
- Can always find things
There are of course more benefits and you might find that some are individual to you. How to get organised at home can be easy, cheap and quick. Here are a few ideas for you.

Things to use for organising at Home
Old subscription boxes
If you have a monthly subscription like Birchbox. You can easily re-use these boxes for cheap storage solutions. I use mine to store craft and stationery supplies downstairs and then use others for storing make-up upstairs. I love this storage solution because you don’t have to spend any extra money on it and it looks great!
Use double-sided tape to secure the boxes together if you want to make a tower. You can customise these as you wish and personalise them for whatever you are storing in them. Just like I have here.
Under-bed storage
These are great for containing all the clutter that can accumulate under your bed and can be bought fairly cheaply as well.
These are amazing solutions to organising. If you’re wanting to store extra bedding, or you want to pack away those big chunky jumpers when the sun makes an appearance, then vacuum pack bags are your go-to.
It’s really quite incredible the amount of space that these bags save, once you have sucked the air out of these bags, you can easily stack a few under your bed and only use a third of the space.
We all own at least one suitcase, right? Well, why not put that essentially empty box to good use when you aren’t using it? Fill it with stuff under your bed for a completely free organising solution. Make use of the things you already have to help organise your home.
Under stair storage
These shelves are great, they can be assembled in the configuration that you want, and you don’t have to use them all either. A great space-saving organisation idea because under the stairs can often be a bit of a tricky one to get storage for because of the shape.
Use that wall space with baskets like these ones. They can hold your veg, or those pesky bits that seem to find there way to the under stair cupboard. A great way to get things off the floor and still be easily accessible.
This is what I have opted for under my stairs. It keeps everything organised as well as leaving enough space for the vacuum cleaner and washing basket.
Get Organised using Baskets
Baskets such as these ones are great for keeping on the windowsill. They look great and also have enough space in them to keep loose bits such as make-up, hair products or even toys.
I found this drawer unit and just HAD to include it. This is perfect for your desk, it’s fairly compact so won’t take up a lot of space as well. This is perfect for your stationery or if you are a crafter, it’s perfect for all of those bits and bobs that you collect. I’m about 5 seconds away from buying this drawer set!
Store away the clutter in some attractive storage baskets. Having deeper baskets means that you can fit more in them and it means that people are less likely to see the stuff you have hidden away in them.
How to get Organised at Home using Hidden Storage
Hidden storage is the best organisation solution. You get a dual purpose out of it, and it always helps that it looks cute as well right? Store blanket, toys, magazines or even cables in a root rest like this in your living room.
Do you always end up with extra make-up bags, make-up, scarfs and nick-nacks? Then using a dual-purpose storage seat for your dressing table could be the answer. This one is extra sturdy and looks really expensive (which it isn’t FYI).
OMG, why have I not seen this before?! This is definitely one I am adding to the amazon basket. Why bother buying them a bean bag when you can make your own out of their stuffed animals! This is absolutely incredible and I bet that your kids will love it as well.
Hooks
Using a hanger like this makes it super quick and easy to add some organisation to your home in a flash. No nails or power tools required.
On the inside of cupboard doors
Use hooks on the inside of your cupboard doors to keep clothes and brushes out the way and tidy. These hooks are moveable as well which makes them even more adaptable to your needs.
If your hooks are visible, why not make them part of your decor. These hooks are different from the norm and look really attractive. Hang them in a quirky pattern to make a feature out of them.
Cups and mugs are such a shelf hogger and I know that it drives me mad having them all stacked in each other. These are nifty though and just need to be slid onto the shelf to be used. This means that you can move them around to suit your needs.

Shelves
Upcycle
Get yourself on a little craft project and upcycle. If you have something that could be used as shelving, then set yourself the goal of turning it into that shelf. It’s not only great for the environment but being creative also helps to lower stress.
Repurpose
Similar to upcycling, but this is just using an already existing shelf you have at home in a new location. Just like I did with this IKEA spice rack.
There’s no harm in buying new, I love these shelves as they will fit into anyone’s decor and having the bar across the front gives it that extra edge, plus making sure you don’t knock anything off by accident.

Sideboards
These next few items may be just over the $50 mark, but they will really do the trick.
The front door always becomes a bit of a dumping ground, shoes, bags, coats, you name it. One of these will give everything a place and also look pretty good too.
Two bins for the kid’s toys, a couple of shelves for books and the top to display some nick nacks. This shelving unit is pretty versatile and can hold lots of items that you need to find a place for.
In all the places I’ve lived, I have always had small kitchens, not enough worktop space or storage. This moveable trolley is great. move it to where you need it and store what you want underneath.
Having some sort of storage in your dining room is seriously helpful. Table linen, glasses and placemats. These sorts of things should be stored in the room that they are used. This frees up space in the original storage place and helps you to organise your home so that it is more productively used.
A softer option for the bedroom. Two larger drawers for jeans and jumpers as well as three drawers for all your smalls.
This was one of my best buys for both pregnancies. I use mine to store all the nappy-changing supplies. Vests, onesies and muslin cloths. I can honestly not recommend this enough. Once your baby has grown, the trolly can still be used for toys, books, socks or underwear.
Car
Protect your car seat from foot scrapes and mud with these organisers. They may not look amazing but will contain everything your child will want in a car journey, including a space to put the iPad so they can watch their program.
Put car bits in this handy organiser. It can be moved around for where you need it and help keep all those loose bit out of the seat pockets and properly organised.
Mind the gap! Turn that annoying space into a useful one. Perfect for storing your phone, wallet and loose change. All the things you would usually lose in that gap.
PHEW! Now, if that hasn’t got your organising juices flowing, then go back and look through all the ideas again and try to pinpoint exactly what area of your house needs help being organised. You ill feel so much better once you have organised those problem areas. Share with me in the comments.
