How do I Optimise my Pinterest for More Traffic?
Complete Business Details
This is in your account details, make sure that you have your web address filled in so that you can link people back to your site. This is a sure way on how to get more Pinterest traffic as allows Pinterest to verify you are a legit site.
Pinterest Name:
This should be the same as all your social media (I know Pinterest isn’t social!). By having the same name it means that others can find you easily on each platform. The difference with Pinterest is that you need to include some keywords in there as well. This means that if people are searching for, let’s say “Vegan Food” and you are a vegan food blogger, you will come up in searches if you include that in your Pinterest name, people know exactly what you are about.
A little tip, you will be limited to a smaller amount of characters on desktop, so my suggestion is to do this on the app as you are allowed more characters for your name. Just a little hack for ya! Below is an example of mine.
Pinterest Description:
This is another space to tell your audience what you are about. It’s like an elevator pitch, you need to be able to describe what and who you are in a very small amount of characters. Remember, keep it relevant and on topic.
Board Order:
Have your boards first. These are the boards that your audience will see first when they look through your profile. I always recommend having a board for just your content. This is where you will pin every post that you write. Then arrange your boards in the order that you feel is most important. I like to order mine in the order that they happen.

Board Covers:
There are different opinions on this one. When I first set up my Pinterest account I created board covers that were (at the time) on brand with my colours and fonts.
Now, they are not relevant and ugly (in my opinion) and I haven’t had a chance to take them down. That is a bad example of optimisation from me!
When creating your board covers, keep them simple, use brand colours and simple fonts. When applying them, make sure that the URL for your board cover links back to the board itself.
Board Names:
Make sure that your board’s names are something that someone could search for. Like ‘First Trimester’ or ‘Blogging Tips’. Don’t try and go all quirky and different by calling them things like ‘The first months’ or something like that. Go for names that people are searching for. If you are a little stuck, then try typing some keywords into Pinterest and see what suggestions it comes up with.
Board Descriptions:
Your description of your pin is what makes your pin show up in search terms. So obviously you need to make sure that you’re using relevant keywords within your description.
In your description, you need to make sure it is jam-packed with relevant keywords. You are already going to know some keywords for your content since you have already SEO’d your blog post. So make sure to include that as well.
The best way to find relevant keywords for your post is to type some search terms into Pinterest. You will find keywords appear underneath as you can see below.
Board Category:
This is another important step! Making sure that you have assigned an appropriate category to your board. When you do this, it tells Pinterest what content that board is storing. As with the board name and description, it helps your board to show up in searches.

Rich Pins:
This is a really important thing to do! When you install rich pins onto your site, it means that certain information gets pulled across with the image that’s being pinned. This makes your pins more Pinterest SEO friendly as well as providing some valuable snippets of info before a reader clicks on it.
Rich pins can be a small pain in the behind to install, there are different ways of doing it and some work for others that don’t work for you. So, I suggest checking out this incredibly valuable post from Rose @ Fudge My Life. Rose will walk you through EXACTLY how to do it so you are successful.
Profile Image:
OK, this one may not help you in search terms, but it is still very important. Just like your Pinterest name, you want this to be the same image across ALL your social media (again, I know that Pinterest is not social media). It helps with brand consistency, as well as people will start to recognise you from platforms such as Instagram and Twitter if your profile image is the same and then they are more likely to give you a follow.
Top tip. Always have a headshot of yourself rather than your logo. This helps to connect the real person behind the account to your audience and show that you are a real person.
Run Pinterest ads:
This is something to experiment with. I have never run a Pinterest ad, but I have heard people say they get great outcomes with them, and I have also heard people say not to bother with them. I plan to start experimenting with Pinterest ads in the new year.
You definitely don’t have to spend money on Pinterest to see incredible results though.
Follow these simple tips and you’ll have a perfectly optimised Pinterest profile. This will also make sure that you get as many eyes on your pins as possible, and we know what that means? eyes on your content and traffic to your blog.
Let me know how you get on, can’t wait to hear!
