Congratulations if you are expecting your little bundle of loveliness!! You are probably very curious, excited and wondering, how big is my baby and what will be my first trimester symptoms? Reaching those weekly milestones of your baby’s growth each week is an exciting time and with each week brings new developments.
For some reason, the easiest thing to compare our baby’s size while they are in the womb is fruit and veg…I guess that this is something everyone can relate to and can easily gauge the size. I know I was excited to know that my bubba was the size of a lime at 12 weeks and mortified (in a good way) that they would grow to the size of a watermelon before being born.
Want some help through the first trimester? The first trimester cheatsheet bundle will help you through those tough days.
So if you are wondering, how big is my baby? and what major developmental milestones are happening each week. Take a read below!
1-3 weeks
For the first 3 weeks, your egg is still doing it’s thing and embedding itself into the lining of your womb. At this stage, you won’t actually know you’re pregnant, crazy huh?
4 Weeks-Poppy Seed
We all know how small a poppy seed is from seeing them on bread rolls and stuff, they are pretty tiny. It’s crazy how something so small is affecting your body and hormones in such a huge way already. Your teeny tiny baby is still just a ball of cells at the moment, that doesn’t mean it isn’t doing anything though! It’s currently busy making itself at home in the comfort of your womb, where it will be and develop for approx, the next 36 weeks. Now you officially know that you’re pregnant, make sure to take your prenatal vitamins and folic acid.
5 Weeks- Sesame Seed
Your bubba is still pretty tiny, but they are getting ready to grow at an alarming rate! You might be starting to feel the first trimester symptoms by now. Feeling sick, sore boobs and tiredness. Make sure you get yourself enough rest and keep yourself hydrated. It will make you feel so much better, I promise!!
6 weeks- Lentil
At 6 weeks, the little baby in your belly has taken quite a growth spurt in the last week. Even though they are only about the size of a lentil! You may be one of the lucky ones and not be experiencing any of the early pregnancy symptoms yet, or you may not experience them at all. This is all normal so don’t worry! If you are feeling tired, sick and bloated at this point, just remember it won’t last forever and you WILL start enjoying your pregnancy soon!
7 Weeks- Blueberry
WOW! your baby doubled in size this week!! You are doing amazingly at growing your tiny human, keep doing what you’re doing! you are probably wondering when you are you going to stop weeing every 5 minutes. I can tell you from experience that this does let up a little bit once your womb starts to expand up into the abdomen in the second trimester as this takes the pressure off of your bladder for a little bit.

8 weeks- Kidney Bean
At this point in your pregnancy, your baby is growing steadily, getting gradually bigger during the first trimester. One of the weirdest symptoms you might experience during the first trimester is developing ‘Super Smell’. Basically, you’ll develop the ability of a highly trained sniffer dog. This is not always a blessing when your feeling sick though!
9 Weeks- Grape
Pre-warn your partner ladies, mood swings may make an appearance. You have a perfectly good excuse for flipping out because the cushions aren’t in the right place. You are growing a baby, and at the moment your baby is feeding directly from you until the placenta has finished developing which may leave you feeling absolutely exhausted. You’re probably feeling bloated, sick, tired, constipated (possibly), and emotional, you have a headache all the time and your bladder feels like it must have shrunk to the size of a pea because you are going to the toilet, literally every 2 minutes. So if you’re feeling a little moody, you be moody and don’t feel bad about it.
10 Weeks- Olive
It is probably at this point in your pregnancy that you are noticing some changes with your body. Your bras might not fit quite as well anymore and you could be starting to feel a little achy. I know this can be frustrating, but your body is gearing up to feed your bubba and stretch to accommodate that beautiful soon-to-be baby.
11 Weeks- Fig
Now your bubba is growing bigger, your bloated belly will start to be swapped for a tiny baby bump. If this is your first baby, then you’ll probably find that you won’t start showing for a few more weeks yet. Leg cramps are a bummer when your pregnant, these tend to happen at night, so make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and taking your daily supplements and folic acid.
12 Weeks- Lime
Week 12 is usually the week that we all look forward to, and can be nervous about. It’s the week that we get to see our baby for the first time, we get to see their heartbeat and suddenly, everything feels very real. It’s completely normal to feel nervous about your first ultrasound, but I’m sure that you will leave the doctors feeling relieved that everything is ok, as well as happy and maybe a little tearful. From this point onwards, your first trimester symptoms will start to decrease which I’m sure you will be happy about.
13 Weeks- Peapod
At the end of 13 weeks, the first trimester has officially ended. Well done, you made it through, and now you’re probably well on your way to telling everyone you know about your little bundle of joy. Now your baby is the size of a peapod your probably looking a little more pregnant now, that’s because your uterus is growing up and out of your pelvis. Do you know what that means? You won’t need to wee, quite as often for a while.
