When your little one has nappy rash, you want to find the best nappy rash cream you can to make sure that it clears up quickly. Nappy rash is horrible for little ones as it can be painful for them. Unfortunately, it’s almost like a right of passage for babies because so many different things can cause it. Teething, growth spurts, not changing them often enough, the nappy being too small or acidic food, can all cause nappy rash. As mums and dads, we just want to fix them and make them better ASAP because we never like to see our little ones uncomfortable.
What is nappy rash cream
Nappy rash cream is a medicated cream that you use when your little one has nappy rash. It’s important that you use the best nappy rash cream that you can to make sure it clears the nappy rash up quickly. To clear this up quickly I always use Metanium ‘The yellow one’.
Why do you need nappy rash cream
You need to use nappy rash cream when your little one has nappy rash because a simple barrier cream won’t heal it. The best nappy rash cream will:
- Ease symptoms
- Relieve discomfort
- Clear nappy rash up
- Create a barrier from any more wee or poo
What’s the difference between a barrier cream and Ointment?
The difference between a barrier cream and an ointment is that the ointment is medicated and must only be applied when needed. A barrier cream can be applied at every nappy change to prevent the cause of nappy rash as it isn’t medicated.
What is the best nappy rash cream?
Metanium. Hands down. I have tried many others that simply do not do the job as well as metanium does. Metanium has three products. One is the nappy rash ointment, another is the barrier cream, and the third is the easy spray-on barrier cream. Perfect for when you are out and about as it’s no mess!

Why is this the best nappy rash cream?
As I just mentioned, I tried a few different creams. I tried Sudocrem, Bepanthem and Weleda. They didn’t clear the nappy rash up half as good as Metanium did.
Metanium healed it quickly and you could see an improvement within one application. The nappy ointment also acts as a barrier cream so that you can protect your baby’s sore bits while the cream heals it. The cream is lanolin-free which is a massive plus if anyone in your household has an allergy too it or you want to avoid animal products.
Another positive point to using Metanium is that it’s yellow. Yes, I know, that might sound a bit odd, but there is a reason I see this as a good thing. Firstly, you can easily see where you have put the cream already. When you change their nappy you can also see how much of the cream has rubbed off on the nappy.
Why do I need to see this you ask?
Well, if you see that a lot of, or nearly all of the cream has rubbed onto the nappy it could be an indication that the nappy is too small, or you are putting it on too tight. Nappy rash can also occur when the nappy is rubbing against your baby’s skin and when their skin is in contact with wee and poo.
Does Metanium have any bad points?
So, no product is completely perfect. Every product has downsides and of course, Metanium has some, just like any other product.
The first thing I should note is that it is a bit pricier than others. You do only need a tiny amount with each application and it’s not an everyday cream, so I suppose that makes up for being slightly more expensive?
The second is that you can only buy it in one size, 30g. Again, on the other hand, it’s not an everyday cream as well as only needing a tiny amount.
Lastly, it contains Salicylate. As I’ve said a few time, the yellow Metanium is medicated which means it should only ever be used as directed and stated on the packaging. In rare cases too much salicylate can cause adverse effects (see info here).

When should I use this nappy rash cream
The yellow Metanium should only be used when your baby has nappy rash. The barrier cream can be used more often and the spray is ideal for the nappy bag for when you’re out and about.
Should I use this at every nappy change?
No, as this is a medicated ointment and should only be used when the nappy rash needs treating. Make sure to follow the instructions stated on the packaging.

Why choose this over other brands?
This is a totally valid question. There are so many other brands out there and they all claim to pretty much do the same thing. I know from experience of trying other creams, that Metanium works the best. You can clearly see improvement after the first application as well. I’ve also noticed that once the cream is on, my daughter settles much quicker as the cream starts to relieve the symptoms of the nappy rash. I will always choose Metanium because:
- It’s specially formulated to treat nappy rash
- It’s a barrier cream as well as medicated
- Not just a barrier (like many others)
- Is lanolin free
- You get fast results
- It also provides relief from symptoms of nappy rash
